Downloading and Installing Individual Styles

Individual styles can be downloaded the EndNote website 

 

Installing Individual Styles

  1. Download the style you want to install.
  2. Double-click the style file.  It should open in EndNote.
  3. In EndNote, go to “File Menu” and choose “Save As”.  Replace the word “copy” with your style’s name and click “Save”.
  4. Click on “File Menu” and choose “Close Style”.

 

Installing All Styles or Styles by Category

Mac OS:

  1. In EndNote, go to “Menu” and choose “Customizer”.
  2. Place a check next to all of the “Output Styles” you’d like.
  3. Click “Next” twice and “Done” to close the window.

Windows:

  1. Go to “Control Panel” and choose “Add or Remove Programs” in Windows XP or “Programs and Features” in Windows Vista/7.  Select EndNote and choose “Change”.  Select the “Modify Option” and choose “Next”.
  2. Place a check next to “Additional Styles” and choose “Will be installed on local hard drive.”  Click the plus sign to select only specific styles.  Click “Next”.

Journal Titles

EndNote 21/20: Generate full or abbreviated journal names

EndNote™ provides a number of terms list to make sure that the journal names in your bibliography are either the full name or abbreviation as your style requires. To set up your terms list, first make a backup of your library as described at EndNote: Moving, backing up, or transferring libraries to another computer Then, please follow the steps below. The procedure is also shown in an embedded video following the steps.  
 

  1. In EndNote, go to "Library > Open Term Lists > Journal Terms List".

  2. Highlight the first journal, and press [Ctrl]+A on the keyboard to highlight all the terms (on a macOS, this would be [Command]+A). Note: If the Journal Terms List is empty, skip to step 4.
  3. Next, press the "Delete Term" button to the right to empty the list of old terms.
  4. Go to the "Lists" tab at the top, and click on the "Import List" button.
  5. Browse to the Term Lists folder within the EndNote folder, and choose to open one of the files that corresponds to the discipline that is found in your library based on the options available in the folder. For Example : select the Medical text file (assuming you want to use the Index Medicus abbreviations).

    If you are on a Windows machine, this folder should default to:
    C:\Program Files\EndNote (EndNote Version Number)\Terms Lists

    If you are on a 64-bit Windows machine, this folder should default to:
    C:\Program Files (X86)\EndNote (EndNote Version Number)\Terms Lists

    If you are on a macOS, this folder should default to:
    Hard Drive: Applications: EndNote (EndNote Version Number): Terms
  6. This will import the correct abbreviations into your library's term list.
  7. Next, to make sure the style is using the correct substitution, go to "Tools > Output Styles > Open Style Manager".
  8. In the list of styles, highlight the style you are using and click the "Edit" button.
  9. Click on "Journal Names" on the left.
  10. Make sure the style is using the Full Name or one of the Abbreviations as needed.

Changing Capitalization

EndNote: Title Capitalization

If you want to change the capitalization of the title in the reference list then you can modify this in the output style:

1. Open EndNote™ and go to Tools >Output Styles > Open Style Manager or Edit > Output Styles > Open Style Manager. 
2. Locate and then double click to open the style that you use. 
3. Under 'Bibliography' on the left, click on 'Title Capitalization' and on the right change the setting to your requirement. 
4. Click on File > Save As to save a copy of the output style 

Once this is done, please be sure to choose the edited style in Word for the changes to reflect. You may click EndNote: Changing Output Styles Within a Document for instructions on to change the style in Word.
